Question by Jason: How do I know if my anxiety attacks are caused by a physical or emotional problem?
I’ve always had a nervous personality. Usually when anxious over something (like a test in school or a job interview) I would have an upset stomach or maybe some acid reflux. It was never a big problem, nothing a little Pepto Bismol couldn’t solve. However, recently my anxiety has dramatically increased. I felt pressure on my chest, I began to sweat, my hands and legs would shake, and I would have problems focusing my eyes while driving, all along with the usual upset or acidic stomach. I have seen three different doctors (at various times) and have been tested for diabetes, sleep seizures, heart problems, and had various blood tests done. After ruling out more serious issues, they concluded that I have been suffering from General Anxiety Disorder. I have been taking Zoloft (used for both panic disorders and depression) for about 3 weeks now. The doctor who prescribed it said that it may take 6 weeks for full results. I’m wondering if there is any way to determine if my problem is physical like my doctor suggests (a chemical imbalance in the brain) or if it’s an emotional problem (I’m leaving for college soon). My anxiety rarely occurs at home, it occurs the most at work, sometimes when at friends’ houses, and in public places like movie theaters or restaurants. I can’t find a common link among the places and situations in which the attacks occur, but perhaps someone in the Answers Community has a suggestion? I don’t want to spend the money on an expensive therapist if I don’t need one, but I’m worried that if I wait the full 6 weeks for the medication to work, it may be too late to get enough emotional help before I leave for school.
Also, I have felt lightheaded and/or dizzy, have a rapid heart beat, and sometimes would say things that didn’t quite make sense.

All your details you post about symptoms including the dizzyness and disorganized speech are caused by this Anxiety disorder. Anxiety disorders are caused by chemical embalances in the brain so Keep taking your medication. You might not even realize its working yet but it probably is, and will get better as long as you keep taking it. You dont need a therapist. Keep taking the medications and you will get better. just make sure you let your doctor know if they dont help you too much so he can put you on something else.
Invega nad Lexapro helped my anxiety a lot when i took it.
